Personal, Social and Health Education
Preparing, Sowing, Growing through life skills and wellbeing
At Christ Church, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education supports children to understand themselves, build positive relationships and thrive in the world around them. Through discussion, reflection and real-life experiences, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need for life—supporting our vision of Preparing, Sowing and Growing and our Christian values at the heart of our school community.
Our Vision for PSHE
Preparing
Through PSHE, we prepare children for life in modern Britain by teaching them how to stay safe, healthy and responsible. Pupils learn about relationships, wellbeing, rights and responsibilities, and how to make positive choices. These essential life skills equip them for the next stage of education and for their future lives.
Sowing
PSHE lessons sow the seeds of kindness, respect and understanding. Through discussion and shared experiences, children learn to value others, manage their emotions and build positive relationships. These experiences nurture Christian values such as Compassion, Respect and Trust, helping children develop empathy and a strong moral sense.
Growing
As pupils progress, they grow in confidence, resilience and independence. PSHE encourages children to reflect, solve problems and take responsibility for their actions. Through leadership opportunities and real-life application, pupils develop values such as Courage, Perseverance and Responsibility, preparing them to become active and thoughtful citizens.
Why we teach PSHE
We teach PSHE so that children can:
- Understand themselves and others
- Build positive relationships and manage emotions
- Stay safe and healthy
- Make informed choices and contribute to their community
This supports our vision by preparing pupils for life, sowing respect and kindness, and growing confident, responsible individuals.
What children learn
Our PSHE curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills develop over time.
- In Key Stage 1, children learn about themselves, their feelings, friendships and basic safety. They begin to understand how to make good choices and respect others.
- In Key Stage 2, pupils develop a deeper understanding of relationships, health, wellbeing and citizenship. They explore topics such as online safety, mental health, rights and responsibilities, and making informed decisions.
Across all year groups, pupils develop:
- Emotional literacy and self-awareness
- Communication and relationship skills
- Understanding of health and wellbeing
- Knowledge of how to stay safe in different situations
By the end of Year 6, pupils are confident in expressing themselves, managing relationships and making responsible choices.
How we teach PSHE
Our PSHE curriculum is inclusive, discussion-based and carefully structured.
- We follow a sequenced curriculum (supported by Kapow) to ensure progression in knowledge and skills.
- Lessons include high-quality discussion, allowing pupils to share ideas, listen to others and develop confidence in speaking.
- Key vocabulary is taught and revisited so children can talk clearly about their thoughts and feelings.
- Learning is linked to real-life experiences, including Forest School, collective worship and school leadership opportunities.
- Teaching is carefully adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, ensuring everyone can access and succeed.
This approach helps learning to become embedded, enabling children to grow in confidence and understanding—just like the mustard seed in our school vision.
Preparing children for the future
Our aim is that every child leaves Christ Church:
- With confidence in who they are and how to express themselves
- With the skills to build positive relationships
- With the knowledge to make safe and healthy choices
- With a strong sense of responsibility towards others and the world
Through PSHE, we nurture pupils who are confident, compassionate and responsible, ready to flourish in school and in life.
