Geography

Preparing, Sowing, Growing through our world

At Christ Church, Geography helps children understand the world around them—both locally and globally. Through exploring places, environments and human impact, pupils develop curiosity, responsibility and respect, supporting our vision of Preparing, Sowing and Growing and the Christian values at the heart of our school community.

Our Vision in Geography

Preparing
Through Geography, we prepare children for life in modern Britain and a changing world. Pupils learn about where places are, how environments work and how people interact with them. They develop key skills such as map reading, fieldwork and decision-making, enabling them to understand real-world issues such as climate change, sustainability and land use.

Sowing
Geography lessons sow curiosity about the world and encourage pupils to explore beyond their immediate surroundings. Through local fieldwork, visits and outdoor learning, children develop a sense of wonder and connection to their environment. These experiences nurture Christian values such as Respect and Compassion, helping pupils appreciate diverse cultures, landscapes and ways of life.

Growing
As pupils progress, they grow into thoughtful and responsible individuals. Geography supports children in understanding their role within the world and encourages environmental stewardship. Pupils develop perseverance through enquiry and the confidence to use evidence to make decisions—reflecting values such as Responsibility, Courage and Perseverance.

Why we teach Geography

We teach Geography so that children can:

  • Understand the world they live in and how it is changing
  • Develop knowledge of places, people and environments
  • Learn how to read maps, interpret data and carry out fieldwork
  • Understand global issues and their responsibility as citizens

This supports our vision by preparing pupils for the future, sowing curiosity and growing a deep understanding of the world around them.

What children learn

Our Geography curriculum is carefully planned to build knowledge and skills over time.

  • In Key Stage 1, children learn about their local area and the wider world. They begin to use maps and simple geographical vocabulary, and explore similarities and differences between places.
  • In Key Stage 2, pupils deepen their understanding of continents, countries and physical and human features. They learn about rivers, climates, settlements and environmental issues, and develop more advanced map and fieldwork skills.

By the end of Year 6, pupils can confidently use geographical knowledge and skills to interpret information, explain patterns and make informed decisions.

How we teach Geography

Our Geography curriculum is knowledge-rich, enquiry-based and practical.

  • We follow a carefully sequenced curriculum (supported by Kapow) to ensure progression in knowledge and skills from EYFS to Year 6.
  • Learning is built over time, with key knowledge and vocabulary revisited so it is remembered and applied confidently.
  • Fieldwork is central to our approach. Pupils regularly explore our local area, including rivers, land use and our rural environment, bringing learning to life.
  • Lessons balance teacher guidance with opportunities for pupils to investigate, discuss and apply their learning through real-world questions.

This approach helps knowledge to take root and grow, reflecting the message of the mustard seed within our school vision.

Preparing children for the future

Our aim is that every child leaves Christ Church:

  • With a strong understanding of the world at local, national and global levels
  • With the skills to think critically about environmental and human issues
  • With confidence in using evidence to make decisions
  • With a sense of responsibility to care for the world and others

Through Geography, we nurture pupils who are curious, responsible and compassionate, ready to play their part in the world and contribute positively to society.

Our Christian Values in Action

Our Geography curriculum reflects our Christian values, which guide how pupils learn about and care for the world.

  • Respect and Compassion – pupils learn about different communities and cultures, developing empathy and understanding of others.
  • Responsibility and Stewardship – children learn about human impact on the environment and are encouraged to care for God’s world through real-life actions such as local projects and environmental awareness.
  • Perseverance and Courage – fieldwork and enquiry tasks require resilience and confidence to explore, question and problem-solve.
  • Truthfulness – pupils learn to interpret data, maps and evidence carefully, drawing honest and balanced conclusions.

These values help our children grow into individuals who act with integrity, compassion and a sense of responsibility for others and the wider world.
