Computing

Preparing, Sowing, Growing through digital learning

At Christ Church, Computing equips children with the skills they need to understand and thrive in a modern digital world. Through learning how technology works, how to use it safely and how to create with it, pupils develop curiosity, confidence and responsibility—supporting our vision of Preparing, Sowing and Growing and our Christian values at the heart of school life.

Our Vision in Computing

Preparing
Through Computing, we prepare children for life in modern Britain by teaching them essential digital skills. Pupils learn how computers work, how to use technology safely and how to solve problems through programming. These skills prepare them for the next stage of education and for a world where technology plays an important role.

Sowing
Computing lessons sow curiosity and creativity. Pupils explore how technology can be used to communicate ideas, solve problems and support others. They are encouraged to ask questions and think critically about the digital world, developing Christian values such as Respect, Compassion and Responsibility in how they use technology.

Growing
As pupils progress, they grow into confident and responsible digital citizens. Computing encourages perseverance through problem-solving and debugging, and builds confidence in using technology independently. Pupils develop values such as Courage, Perseverance and Truthfulness, particularly when evaluating information and working collaboratively online.

Why we teach Computing

We teach Computing so that children can:

  • Understand how technology works and how it is used in everyday life
  • Develop problem-solving and logical thinking skills
  • Learn how to stay safe and responsible online
  • Use technology creatively to share ideas and information

This supports our vision by preparing pupils for the future, sowing curiosity and responsibility, and growing confident, capable individuals.

What children learn

Our Computing curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills develop over time.

  • In Key Stage 1, children learn basic computing skills such as using devices, understanding simple instructions and beginning programming through sequences and patterns.
  • In Key Stage 2, pupils develop a deeper understanding of programming, digital systems and data. They learn to design, write and debug programs, and to use technology purposefully for a range of tasks.

Across all year groups, pupils learn about:

  • Programming and problem-solving
  • Using technology safely and responsibly
  • Understanding how data and digital systems work
  • Creating digital content such as presentations and media

By the end of Year 6, pupils are confident users of technology who can solve problems, think logically and make informed choices in the digital world.

How we teach Computing

Our Computing curriculum is structured, progressive and practical.

  • We follow a carefully sequenced curriculum (supported by the Teach Computing scheme) to ensure progression in knowledge and skills.
  • Pupils learn through a combination of practical activities, discussion and problem-solving tasks.
  • Key concepts are revisited so that learning is secure and remembered over time.
  • Online safety is taught throughout the curriculum, ensuring pupils understand how to stay safe in the digital world.
  • Lessons include opportunities for collaboration, creativity and leadership, helping pupils apply their learning in meaningful ways.

This approach allows learning to develop step by step, helping knowledge and skills to take root and grow—reflecting the message of the mustard seed in our school vision.

Preparing children for the future

Our aim is that every child leaves Christ Church:

  • With confidence in using technology safely and effectively
  • With strong problem-solving and logical thinking skills
  • With an understanding of how to use technology responsibly
  • With curiosity about the digital world and future opportunities

Through Computing, we nurture pupils who are confident, responsible and thoughtful, ready to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
