Preparing, Sowing, Growing through our understanding of the world
At Christ Church, Science helps children to explore, understand and care for the world God has created. Through practical investigation, curiosity and discovery, pupils develop knowledge, skills and attitudes that reflect our vision of Preparing, Sowing and Growing and our Christian values at the heart of school life.
Our Vision in Science
Preparing
Through Science, we prepare children for life in modern Britain by equipping them with essential knowledge about the natural and physical world. Pupils learn how to think scientifically, ask questions and make sense of the world around them, supporting their understanding of health, technology and the environment.
Sowing
Science lessons sow curiosity and a love of discovery. Through practical investigations, outdoor learning and exploration, children develop a sense of wonder about the world. These experiences nurture Christian values such as Compassion, Responsibility and Thankfulness, helping pupils appreciate and care for living things and the environment.
Growing
As pupils progress, they grow into confident and resilient learners. Science encourages perseverance, critical thinking and independence. Pupils develop the confidence to test ideas, learn from mistakes and explain their findings—living out values such as Courage, Perseverance and Truthfulness.
Why we teach Science
We teach Science so that children can:
- Develop a deep understanding of the world around them
- Build curiosity and a lifelong love of learning
- Learn how to ask questions, investigate and find answers
- Make informed decisions about the world and their future
This supports our vision by preparing pupils for the future, sowing curiosity and growing confident, thoughtful individuals.
What children learn
Our Science curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge and skills build over time.
- In Key Stage 1, children explore basic scientific ideas through observation and simple investigations. They begin to describe what they see, use simple equipment and talk about their findings.
- In Key Stage 2, pupils develop a deeper understanding of biology, chemistry and physics. They learn to plan investigations, measure accurately, analyse data and explain their conclusions using scientific vocabulary.
Across all year groups, children learn to “work scientifically” by asking questions, testing ideas and using evidence to support their thinking.
By the end of Year 6, pupils are confident in explaining scientific ideas, using key vocabulary and applying their learning to new situations.
How we teach Science
Our Science curriculum is practical, knowledge-rich and enquiry-based.
- We follow a carefully sequenced curriculum to ensure progression in knowledge and enquiry skills.
- Practical investigation is central—children regularly carry out experiments, observations and outdoor learning.
- Learning is revisited over time so that important knowledge is remembered and applied confidently.
- Vocabulary is explicitly taught so pupils can explain their ideas clearly and precisely.
- Outdoor learning, including Forest School, is used to enrich learning and connect science to real-life experiences.
This approach helps knowledge to take root and grow, reflecting the message of the mustard seed within our school vision.
Preparing children for the future
Our aim is that every child leaves Christ Church:
- With a secure understanding of key scientific ideas
- With the skills to investigate, question and think critically
- With confidence in using evidence to explain their thinking
- With a sense of responsibility for the world around them
Through Science, we nurture pupils who are curious, resilient and responsible, ready to embrace future opportunities and contribute positively to the world.
