Religious Education
RE in Christ Church CE Primary School is taught in accordance with the requirements of the Shropshire Agreed Syllabus. RE has a special status as part of the basic curriculum but not the National Curriculum. This means that RE has equal standing in relation to the National curriculum subjects but it is not subject to statutorily prescribed national attainment targets, programmes of study and assessment arrangements, which would be compulsory for all pupils, without exception. You can read our RE policy here RE Policy Sum 22-25
Our RE is taught in accordance with the Shropshire Agreed Syllabus.
- This syllabus is designed to support schools in developing and delivering excellence in RE. It responds to national calls for deepening pupils’ knowledge about religions and for developing their ‘religious literacy’. It does this by studying one religion at a time (‘systematic’ units), and then including ‘thematic’ units, which build on learning by comparing the religions, beliefs and practices studied.
- Our scheme of work will ensure that Christianity is included in each key stage and we use the Understanding Christianity resources as recommended by the Church of England.
- In Reception and Key Stage One, Christianity, Judaism and Islam are taught.
- In Key Stage Two Christianity, Judaism, Islam and the Hindu Dharma are taught. Other faiths will be referred to e.g. at times of celebrations and in relation to other topic themes e.g. in relation to geographical location units or other RE questions from the Agreed Syllabus.
- Our Long Term RE Plan is available here and references the high quality scheme of work, Understanding Christianity which we use: 2025-27 RE Long Term Plan with Understanding Christianity This gives you a title of each half term unit of work for each class. We are able to provide parents with the unit outlines so that you know what your child is covering. The teacher will also reference the RE unit in the termly or half-termly curriculum grid which is on the class page and you will get a summary paragraph outlining the content of each unit.
- We buy in curriculum support from RE Today who are subject specialists to ensure that our curriculum is up-to-date, rigorous and preparing children for life in Britain where they will meet many people from different faiths and none. We want them to have an awareness of major worldviews. RE Today provides a scheme of work and assessment material so we can support children to make progress in their understanding.
- As part of our RE curriculum we visit different places of worship and so your child will visit a Christian place of worship and a place of worship from another religion during their time here (usually a Hindu Mandir or Temple).
The Shropshire Agreed Syllabus ensures that pupils:
• know and understand a range of religious and non-religious worldviews, so that they can: describe, explain and analyse religious and non-religious beliefs and practices, recognising the diversity which exists within and between individuals and communities; identify and investigate the questions posed and the responses offered by the world’s religions and non-religious worldviews; appraise the nature and significance of religion and non-religious worldviews; and appreciate the impact of faith, beliefs and values on individuals and communities
• know and understand a range of responses to questions of meaning, purpose and truth
• develop the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and non-religious worldviews, so that they can: describe them, interpret text, consider, analyse, and appraise evidence critically; explain some of the key concepts that underpin them; and articulate beliefs and values clearly in order to explain the reasons why they may be important in their own and other people’s lives.
Parents have the right to request that their child is withdrawn for Religious Education. Please contact the Head of School in the first instance if you feel this is something you wish to do.
